Canon EOS 6D basics
We all have been waiting for this moment. Cheap full-frame DSLR was our dream for years! And if previously we could satisfy ourselves just buying used old-fashioned EOS 5D (Mark One) now we can buy NEW Canon EOS 6D - worlds first cheap DSLR for just $2 099,00 for body or $2 699,00 for kit with magnificent Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS.
I would consider this camera as a cheaper version of Canon EOS 5D Mark III (from $3 148,88 for body) or as an update of older Canon EOS 5D Mark II (from $1 799,00 body only).
Of course 6D has its weak points (for example weaker AF system comparing to new 5D Mark III) but I think that for this price (almost half of Mark III price) this camera is just stunning! Prices for Mark II is now getting lower but even despite the fact that Mark II sells less expensive than 6D I’d better buy the newer. Decision making tips are below in section “Alternatives”.r sealing

If you don’t have 24-105 lens yet consider to buy it in a combination with EOS 6D camera. You will virtually get this lens with $150.00 discount.
Lens suggestion
As a normal lens for reasonable money you will find nothing better than 24-105mm f/4L IS lens (priced from $53,90 alone and significantly cheaper as a kit to this camera). This lens has very useful focal length range, Image Stabilizer for low-light hand-held photography, tough design and beautiful image quality. Slow aperture (f/4 across all the focal range) partially compensated with IS system.
Second normal lens can be much more expensive (from $2 099,00) Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II. It has one stop faster aperture, much crispier picture and lower distortion than 24-105mm but it costs much more, has no IS and has 30% shorter focal length range. Cheaper EF 28-135mm IS (just $418,88) will be also very good, but not so tough and crisp.
For low-light photography – take Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM (from $359,00). It is really fast (f/1.4), it has very consistent picture quality and reasonably fast AF.
As a universal wide angle lens take 17-40mm f/4L (from $699,88) or 16-35mm f/2.8L II (from $1 489,00). First one is significantly cheaper but slower, second – has better image quality, tougher design and faster aperture for double of price. Less universal but better in terms of distortion, image quality and low-light performance will be one of new stabilized wide-angle primes: EF 24mm f/2.8 IS (from $699,99) and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS (from $649,99). They a reasonably fast (f/2.8 – faster than same priced 17-40mm) and stabilized! Which is virtually makes them f/1…f/0.7! 2-stops faster wide-angle lens Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II (from $1 599,00) is much more expensive but will be much better for low-light action photography as IS can do nothing with your subject motion.
Best general purpose telephoto lens if Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II (from $2 199,00). It has brilliant image quality, fast and precise AF and tough design. For more information read more about 70-200 series lenses.
Alternatives
Now old man the Canon EOS 5D Mark II become cheaper than EOS 6D ($1 799,00 vs $2 099,00). But I think that 6D costs this additional money! Newer and better AF system, faster continuous shooting (4.5 vs 3.9 fps), bigger LCD and lots of pleasant tweaks.
But comparison with almost twice more expensive Canon EOS 5D Mark III (from $3 148,88 for body only) will be not in favor of 6D: 5D Mark III has significantly improved AF system, two card slots, faster FPS, 100% viewfinder coverage, bigger LCD, tougher design and lots of other things.
30% cheaper EOS 7D (from $1 399,00 body only) dedicated for sport and action photography and in this genre it will perform better due to faster continuous shooting speed, faster AF system. But it has small (1.5 crop) and relatively old (2009) sensor. This is why 6D will be significantly better for unhurried artistic photography: studio, landscapes, portraits and so on.
